What a frenzy! We’re nearly through the joyous (and crazy) holiday time…presents purchased and opened, meals cooked and eaten, relatives have come and gone…it’s a perfect time to sit back, relax a little and embark on a family movie night (or movie day)!
There are classics that we see year after year and there are just plain giggle-silly comedies sure to evoke a smile; you know…the kind that are funny regardless of age or gender. To get you in the spirit, we’ve compiled a short list of suggestions. Whether you choose one from our list or think of one you cherish as a family, pop in the DVD, pop some corn, put on your “footies” and enjoy your time together!
Holiday Classics
- White Christmas (1954; not rated) - A successful song-and-dance team become romantically involved with a sister act and team up to save a Vermont Inn.
- Polar Express (2004; G) – On Christmas Eve, a doubting boy boards a magical train that’s headed to the North Pole.
- Miracle on 34th Street (1947; not rated) – When a nice old man who claims to be Santa Claus is institutionalized as insane, a young lawyer decides to defend him by arguing in court that he is the real thing.
- It’s a Wonderful Life (1946; not rated) – An angel helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing what life would have been like if he was never born.
- Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (1964; not rated) – A misfit reindeer and his friends look for a place that will accept them.
- Meet Me in St. Louis (1945; not rated) – In the year before the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, the four Smith daughters learn lessons of life and love, even as they prepare for a reluctant move to New York.
- Holiday Affair (1940; not rated) – The Christmas season romance of a young widow and a sales clerk who (thanks to her) is employed.
- Holiday Inn (1942; not rated) – Lovely Linda Mason has crooner Jim Hardy head over heels, but suave stepper Ted Hanover wants her for his new dance partner.
- Scrooge (1951; not rated) – An old bitter miser is given a chance for redemption when he is haunted by ghosts on Christmas Eve.
Holiday Comedies
- Elf (2003; PG) – After inadvertently wreaking havoc on the elf community due to his ungainly size, a man raised as an elf at the North Pole ventures to the U.S. in search of his true identity.
- Home Alone (1990; PG) – An eight year old, who is accidentally left behind while his family flies to France at Christmas, defends his home against idiotic burglars.
- Christmas Vacation (1989; PG-13) – The Griswold family’s plans for a big family Christmas predictably turn into a big disaster.
- March of the Wooden Soldiers (1934; not rated) – Ollie Dee and Stanley Dum try to borrow money from their employer, the toymaker, to pay off the mortgage.
- The Santa Clause (1994; PG) – When a man inadvertently kills Santa on Christmas Eve, he finds himself magically recruited to take his place.
- A Christmas Story (1983; PG) – Ralphie has to convince his parents, teachers, and Santa that a Red Ryder BB gun really is the perfect gift for the 1940’s.
- The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993; PG) – Jack Skellington, king of Halloweentown, discovers Christmas Town, but doesn’t quite understand the concept.
- Groundhog Day (1993; PG) – A weatherman finds himself living the same day over and over again.
