Picture this. The school year just ended and it's the first day of summer vacation. The weather is absolutely perfect and your tween is slopped on the couch. With a frown on their face they mutter two words, "I'm bored!" Ouch! Any parent knows these words are the equivalent of nails scratching on a chalkboard. So what can you do to bring happiness to both you and your preteen? Our answer: Camp!

For preteens who have no interest in leaving New York City or tourists who would like to offer their kids an interesting experience while they visit, TweenParent.com has found a variety of camps that range from one to eight weeks. Take your pick, there are lots to choose from.  Just don't book at the last minute. These camps fill up fast.

Camp Intrepid Does your child love science? If so, enroll them into Camp Intrepid. This camp has themed weeks ranging from learning about the universe to underwater archeology. This camp runs in sessions of a week to eight weeks.

Arts in Action Arts in Action specializes in art history. This camp takes it's campers on tours through museums and explores the ideas and processes involved in producing art. Sessions run for two, four and six weeks.

Calhoun Summer Dance & Video This camp allows tweens to create their own film project. Here they will learn scriptwriting, costuming, choreography and editing. Camp runs Jul 27-Aug 7.

Asphalt Green For sports fans, Asphalt Green offers swimming, soccer, basketball and baseball. Kids can also try crafts and music. Camp runs Jun 29-Aug 14.

Basketball City's Summer Camp This camp is all about basketball. Daily clinics are designed to improve your preteens dribbling, shooting and passing skills. Dates of operation will be announced soon.

Crossover Sports Academy Crossover Sports Academy is committed to nothing but sports. The camp offers wiffle ball, dodge ball, capture the flag, and much more. Camp runs Jul 13-24, Aug 3-7.

ArchiCamp Has your tween ever wished they could be an architect? They can at ArchiCamp. Preteens design, build models and visit local buildings related to their projects. Camp runs Jun 22-Jul 10.

New York Film Academy Camp This camp is the perfect opportunity for tweens who want to create a film or act. This program is offered in one or two week sessions.

Camp Broadway Is your tween obsessed with Broadway or just theater in general? Camp Broadway will make your tween feel just like a Broadway star with programs specializing in dancing and singing. Upon completion, your tween will perform a showcase presentation. July 13 - 17 or August 3 - 7.

Fantastic Gymnastics As well as learning rhythmic gymnastics and creative movement, Fantastic Gymnastics offers your preteen swimming, dance, sport and creative movement. Camp runs from Jun 29-Aug 21.

Thalia Kids' Book Club Camp This camp is designed for avid readers and writers. Preteens will meet children's book authors, be part of a writing workshop, put together a writing portfolio, participate in drama activities and go on book-related field trips. One-week sessions are available between August 2-14.
