Instead of serving as a guaranty of academic success, being academically "gifted" is just one measure of a child's potential.  Often times, children who demonstrate an obvious talent have other areas that warrant special attention.  On top of that, social pressures, such as the desire to fit in, can negatively affect academic performance.
